Cargo Airport in Escuintla

This is from an article in Prensa Libre. I hadn't heard anything about it before but it is an interesting project. The idea is to expand the existing airport so large planes can land there (they say a 767). The primary focus would be cargo -- the only cargo airport between Toluca Mexico and Columbia.

As Escuintla is not far above sea level, it would be much more efficient than landing in Guatemala City which is at about 5000 feet.

Note that the article says "extend the runways to 160 meters". Clearly, it means add 160 meters to the runways.
