Government Working to Help People

For those not in Guatemala, this short video is worth watching. Why? Because it shows what government should be doing to deal with a crisis.

While there are other plans in process to help the people, this one is about getting food to people in need. They are talking about finishing 200,000 "food boxes" to give to people. The president says this should help about 1,100,000 people. That's about 6% of the total population of the country.

That may not sound like a lot but we are not talking about a family that typically eats steak twice a week, ... The military are deliving these boxes to people who eat beans and tortillas. It is the difference between life and death for these people. It's direct aid.

If there is politics involved, it sure doesn't show. In Guatemala more people see a reason for the government to be there and expect their help. And those people take to the streets in protest when the government is not taking the right actions. The president has only been in office for 100 days but he certainly is earning "brownie points" for his actions.

For those who say "but Guatemala is just a tiny third-world country", it has a population just a bit less than New York state or about half that of California. Guatemala exports over $4 billion in products to the U.S. and that is not just bananas, coffee and sugar.
