Ciudad Nueva

Ciudad Nueva

Besides a few gringos reading these posts I am guessing that anyone in Guatemala City reading them lives in Zona 10 or somewhere else south of the center of the city. I confess that it was not that long ago that I had never been in Zona 2 and now I live here. So, this might be useful information to many.

I was walking the dog and decided to head up to Ciudad Nueva. Where is that again? Head north from the center of the city heading toward Calle Marti/the Pereférico. If you continue north on 11 Ave in Zona 2 (more or less) you end up in Ciudad Nueva. Basically, it is narrow (because there are no through east-west streets) but long.

What you quickly see is a lack of local businesses. Yeah, a church or two and some big industrial-like stuff but very few local tiendas. It's like one big residential cul-de-sac. It's relatively old -- maybe the 1950s -- with some nice big houses as well as small ones. But, with no local businesses and not on a bus route it fits the definition of suburbia. A place where you have to get into your car to shop.

It's not a place where I would want to live (I say that because we had a couple of places on a "take a look" list but options closer to Universidad Mariano Galvez appeared) but someone might. By that, I mean if you want to live in the suburbs, need to go to the center of the city for work and don't want to get totally swallowed by the commute traffic south of the city center it might be an option.
